Youth Enrichment

In partnership with the City of Cotati, Sandy Loam offers Montessori-inspired enrichment programs that allow preschool and elementary-aged children to be active participants in the care of Veronda-Falletti Ranch. We also offer hands-on learning opportunities for teens.

More than 100 years ago, Dr. Maria Montessori revolutionized our understanding of how young people learn through her research and experiences. Her theory of child development and the resulting method of education continues to be validated to this day.

We are inspired by Dr. Montessori’s belief that farms are the optimal educational laboratories. At Sandy Loam, we integrate the fundamental principles of the Montessori Method with an immersive farm- and nature- based learning environment for all. Our programs are implemented by experienced instructors & camp counselors who hold background & health clearances.

Afterschool Enrichment

Our early release enrichment program provides farm, nature and art- based experiences during local schools’ early release hours. Students will grow food and share their bounty with their families in a monthly farm box! Engaging activities and projects are introduced continuously, following themes that are inspired by the children’s and teacher’s interests. Homework support and a snack is provided.

Farm & Nature Camps

Open to children ages 4 to 12 years old, our Montessori-inspired farm & nature camps integrate learning with the freedom, warmth and fun that summer brings. Join us for these exciting adventures!

+ Camps operate during local school districts’ closures.  Follow link to search for openings.
+ We VERY STRONGLY suggest that 4 and 5 year old children are enrolled for a minimum of 2 weeks so that we can establish healthy routines and individualized care for our youngest campers.
+ All children must be toilet trained.
+ We will also host orientation visits for 4 and 5 year old children prior to camp, accompanied by a guardian, so they can connect with our team and check out their very exciting farm summer camp environment. We will also discuss your child’s development with you so we are prepared to support our littlest campers.

Farm Field Trips

Students, their teachers and parent volunteers are welcomed to join us for guided field trips of Veronda-Falletti Ranch. Learn about animals, crops, growing seasons, composting & pollinators! Follow-up curriculum is shared with teachers so that the children’s experiences at the Ranch are easily integrated into the classroom.

Please reach out to us if your early childhood classroom community would like to participate in this program!

Teen Apprentice Program

The Sandy Loam Teen Agriculture Apprenticeship Program provides hands-on learning opportunities in sustainable farming, environmental stewardship and farm-to-table practices for local youth. Designed to build practical skills and ecological awareness, the program engages teen participants in core agricultural tasks such as soil preparation, composting, animal care, and ecosystem-based learning, as well as harvesting, preparing, and sharing fresh produce. Through direct participation in farm operations and farm-to-table experiences, apprentices gain meaningful insight into land stewardship and sustainable food systems. The program fosters responsibility, teamwork, and a lasting appreciation for agriculture, healthy food, and the environment, preparing the next generation of environmental leaders.
